2016年立法委員選舉，中國社會黨憑藉同年的[[富士康集體跳樓事件]]獲得更多來自勞動階級及農民工階層的支持，並取代國民黨重新成為第一大黨，這讓魏京生政府在2016年後開始進入「跛腳鴨狀態」。同時，更多新興政黨如民眾黨、公民黨等開始進入立法院，讓立法院變得更加多元化。
 
而省長選舉中也開始有了本土化的趨勢，越來越多本土政黨開始參選選舉並有少數幾個勝選。讓地方層面的「三黨鼎立」情況開始衰落。
